How pre-flight planning will save you in the long run!

Any frequent flyer will tell you that success in travel starts well before you board your flight. Planning ahead is crucial and can make all the difference to how you look and feel both during and after your trip. Creating a travel routine can be highly personal, but here are five things you can do that will help you plan an amazing journey:

Packing smart

Unless your trip is last minute, you should always take some time to plan your packing in advance. Some people like to lay things out a couple of days ahead and add to it as they remember extra items. But writing a list can also really help. Research your destination, think about the weather and time of year, consider the activities you’ll be taking part in and the type of outings you might go on. Try to double up items where possible and think about your outfits from top to toe, including accessories and shoes.

Get quality sleep before you fly

Trying to nap on a plane is all well and good, and if you’re lucky you’ll manage a few hours of shut eye. But nothing can replace the value of a really good, solid sleep the night before you leave. It’s easy to stay up late packing and planning and doing last minute life admin, but try to organize yourself and plan to get at least 6 or 7 hours of quality rest before you travel and we promise you’ll be better for it.

Squeeze in some exercise

You might feel a bit silly pulling out some yoga moves at the departure gate or in the aisle of the airplane, but trust us, it’s worth it. Scheduling in a pre-flight gym session can really help to keep the blood pumping (some airports even offer exercise facilities for transiting passengers) and making time to get out into the sunshine for a walk or run when you arrive at your destination is a simple way to ward off jetlag.

Drink LOTS of water

It’s amazing how easy it is to forget this when you’re mid-flight and distracted by meals and movies and naps. Time flies by and the occasional glass of water is nowhere near enough. You need to be strategic about it. Commit to some hefty pre-hydration (drink at least a litre of water before you board) and take a couple of big bottles of water onto the plane with you. Drink the first one quickly, and then sip the other throughout the rest of your flight.

Plan your flight schedule

Think about your destination and the time zone changes, and plot out your meals and sleep time accordingly. If you’re lucky enough to travel business or first class, you’ll have the option of choosing the time of your meals. But even in economy you can choose your own adventure by bringing healthy snacks on board with you to be enjoyed at your leisure.
